Porsches 2 Oxford 2010 promises to be bigger and better than ever without sacrificing the distinct personal touches that make it completely casual and relaxing. On Friday July 30th they will start with an open house during the day at the Taj Ma Garaj www.tajmagaraj.com in nearby Dayton, OH (1hr). The Taj is a must-see Porsche collection and museum that is very unique. Just a $10 donation at the door gets you inside and benefits the Ronald McDonald House. Starting at 6pm Friday night they will move back to Oxford for ‘Party in the Park’ — a preview show of the cars that will attend the Saturday show. They have included a beer garden and food vendors on the lawn of the town square. The beer garden and food will be open from 6pm to 9pm Friday night. Your survey results said you would like to see more vendors, sponsors and some informational demonstrations throughout the day. P20 is moving up to the ‘next level’ and providing those to you this year.

They will continue with their ‘Peoples’ Choice” car show with awards for the top ten percent of registered cars (Top-50 awards), along with the drive to Hueston Woods State Park following Saturday’s awards ceremony. To accommodate the additional cars, They have obtained more downtown parking space along the brick-lined city streets and offer limited availability free covered parking after 4pm across the street from the Elms Holiday Inn.

Pipercross to Supply AMD BTCC Golf

One of Pipercross top UK distributors, AmD Essex are entering the 2010 British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). "The really interesting news is that our chosen car is a VW Golf, a manufacturer unseen in the BTCC arena for over 20 years".

"We are really proud to be bringing the Volkswagen name back into top-line touring cars. We have been working on a plan to move up to the BTCC arena after winning the Dunlop Sportmaxx Cup in 2009 and a BTCC VW Golf is a perfect fit," said AmD's Shaun Hollamby. "The VW Golf is one of the UK's most popular cars and it would be great to see hordes of VW Golf owners cheering us on throughout the year!"

Hollamby will be the main driver and Simon Shaw, who won the Dunlop Sportmaxx title for AmD, is trying to raise the necessary budget to campaign the car at selected rounds of the championship.

The car is based on a MK5 VW Golf shell with a 2.0 16V normally aspirated power unit with a competitive 285bhp. Pipercross filter,Sadev sequential gearbox, KW competition suspension, Milltek exhaust, HJS Sports catalytic converter and Alcon brake and clutch parts complete the performance package.

"Starting with a new car package, we expect 2010 to be a gradual development season but I am confident I can get a few competitive results. Winning races is not a realistic target at this stage but, having won races in every series in which I have competed, I would like to think I can hold my own at this level," said Hollamby.

VW TDI Cup Crash

Through our sister company, Truechoice, we sell a lot of road racing parts and safety parts. One of our vender's sent us this and I thought it was worth posting.

SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup driver Devin Cates had a high speed roll at Round 7 of the series in August........he went off big time at the infamous "Canada Corner" and sustained major damage to his car. Thanks to all of the safety equipment he was wearing - including the defNder Head and Neck Restraint - Cates was able to walk away from the crash to fight another day. He rebounded quickly, with a double header opportunity at New Jersey Motorsports Park this past weekend. Cates wasted no time, with a convincing win at Round 9. The win earned Cates a black colored defNder, which all TDI Cup Winners have received this season.

INTRODUCING PAP-PARTS’ NEW SPAM-FREE EMAIL MARKETING PROGRAM

Or why we don’t like don’t like spam or AOL for that matter!

Earlier this year both of our companies, PAP-Parts and Truechoice Motorsports, sent out broadcast emails as our way to offer specials, discounts and other valuable information to our customers. We had been doing this off and on for seven years with no problems.

We always kept in mind people hate spam. We felt we were not sending spam as we understood it, since we were sending legitimate offers only to email addresses furnished to us by our own customers and saved in our own database. We even had clear email titles identifying the sender and the offer and we did have opt-out links for our customers to have us take them off of our email address list if they so wished.

What is that old-time saying about one rotten apple spoiling the entire barrel? Our entire email marketing program heard from the one rotten apple…an unidentified AOL user.

About a week after an email was sent out we received an email from our web store site hosting company stating that if we didn’t stop using their servers to email spam, they would have to shut us down totally and take us off their servers due to Ameritech, their IPO, asking them to cease and desist from allowing spam from PAP-Parts.

Upon receiving the notice about being labeled spammers we did what any party that thinks it is innocent would do…state we were wronged and then try to prove it to whoever lodged the complaint we were not spammers.

That is pretty hard to do in the undefined and elusive e-world. We started with our hosting company and explained that we had been sending marketing emails for years and had had no problem and even asked them to review the alleged spam. They seemed to agree but with the heat on from Verizon, they took the easy way out and suggested now would be a good time to go to a full email marketing specialist that could help us run a proper opt-in, spam-free, good-practices email program.

Our second tack was to contact Verizon. Us against the big guys! Well, sadly Verizon couldn’t tell us what we had done wrong, only that we had done it. They wouldn’t listen or allow us to show proof…to them we were spammers based only on the complaint of one single AOL user labeling us as such. The Verizon representative said the industry was riding very hard on spammers and they take the complaint of someone in the public as serious. Guilty…forget about proving it!
I bet you can guess where we headed to complain next?

That’s right…AOL. Let’s be short and to the point about AOL. Here is a company that markets itself as a leader in internet communications technology and guess how you contact them with a question about one of their customers labeling you a spammer? You write them a letter and mail it to them. I guess that is some kind of a low-tech way to hide from hi-tech complaints. Is AOL even a player in this new internet world anymore?

We were, left with a barrel of rotting apples. It was now time to check into complete broadcast email packages. The thinking for this seems to be if they can get the real non-spamming marketers into legit programs that can be tracked, edited and managed better they might be able to slowly eliminate spamming by the real internet bad apples. It makes sense, what hidden spammer is going to come out of the internet darkness and identify itself with a legit program?

Welcome to the new world of fully spam-free, opt-in-only marketing system through GoDaddy Express Marketing, one of the companies our store hosts recommended.

We sent out new PAP-Parts email marketing opt-in forms at the end of June to have our old customer list sign up for the new controlled program. We waited for our customers to respond to the opt-in form, and after about a month's time we have discovered our email list has been pared down considerably.

It is going to take some time for the news to get out that the only way you will get an email from PAP-Parts from now on is if you opt-into the entire program as it is designed. You can only do that from your own computer by using the opt-in forms we sent out to the old mailing list customers or by going to the front page of the PAP-Parts web site and clicking on the “sign Up to Receive PAP Email” graphic to take you to the form you will need to officially sign up. This is how GoDaddy and others control and prevent spamming.

Our first PAP-Parts email generated from the new Express Marketing software went out a few weeks ago and was sent only to the PAP-Parts customers that sent back the opt-in forms sent to the old customers list. Maybe word will get around there are real benefits in receiving the PAP-Parts marketing emails. Please help us spread the word by telling others that drive Porsche, Audi and VW cars about the current email they missed and how not to miss great sales and special offers in the future.

I do realize that my daughter's Jr dragster has nothing to do with VW, Porsche's, and/or Audi's but the car does say PAP-Parts on the side. I know it would be a stretch to make comparisons because it's air cooled or rear engined. I think it is interesting and pretty impressive that an 8 year old can go 0 to about 50 mph in about 12 seconds. (A proud dad has got to take every chance he has to brag a little)

When I was out at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for Truechoice Motorsports, I got to see the most unique VW race car.

This is a 1968 beetle owned by Vic Frazzell out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The car was converted into a race car in 1974
Most of the interior has been removed except for the stock door panels and rubber floor mats
Not what you would expect to see
It held its own on the course here at Mid-Ohio
This car has 4 wheel disc brakes with racing pads like we sell at our Truechoice Motorsports.
The car is maintained by Yard Racing out of Wisconsin.
It has an Adjustable suspension so the are taking advantage of that between groups in the paddock
It has a 1600 dual port with 44 IDF Webers featuring forged pistons, forged rods, ported heads, light weight crankshaft, chrome molly pushrods, and a MSD Ignition. They tell me it puts out 135 horse power
This car was well prepped and featured really nice workmanship

It runs aproximatly 125 mph at Road America

Every month I get a Porsche newsletter e-mailed to me by my friends at Porsche in Germany. Last month they had an interesting twist - a 4 door that's not an SAV. It kinda has that Aston-Martin look to it so I wonder if it will show up in the next James Bond movie. They call it the Panamera but I still haven't got all the specs on it.

The extraordinary design of the Panamera is unmistakably Porsche. I wonder how sports car technology will do in the luxury class market. This will be a different kind of venture, Not a luxury car maker making a sporty car but a sports car maker making a luxury car. The real question is when will it come in a Cup or GT3 version.

PCA at Sebring

The PCA kicks off the new year with a Porsche Club event in Sebring, Florida at the legendary Sebring International Raceway. The races being heald the first week in Febuary makes for some cold mornings but some great racing

The pink falimangos are part of the theme so we had one hanging arround the Truechoice/PAP-Parts trailer all weekend. (I kinda liked it)

Because of the size of the track I got to see some graet examples of Porsche race cars. I bet they had 50+ cars on the grid at any given time.

Amazing just how long those rows of cars are.

In the course of the weekend, I got to see about everything raced or driven through the pits.

I love the on the track action.

Only bad thing about a track this big is that the cars thin out in a few laps.

But they still buzz arround there at a pretty good clip.

The most interesting thing is the people and their passions.

Some folks rented U-haul trailers and some folks like TRG brought 6 haulers.

Detroit autorama 09

Every year I make the trip to Detroit for the annual Autorama and this year was no exception. The car club I am in has been putting on this show for 57 years and every year it gets better. If you have never been it's worth going. As I walked through the show, I figured I would take some picture of the German cars for our Pap-Parts clients. The VW's were represented well but there were few Porsche's, and only one Audi.

This is my personal favorite - a Volks Willies - VERY COOL

Karmann Ghia

The car show on the square in Sunbury is always a good time. I meet Mark Richmond and his very nice Karmann Ghia there this fall. This car is beautiful. (my appreciation for German cars working at PAP-Parts has given me) The overall look he tried to achieve was to blend some of the earlier (1956-1965) Ghia amenities with some of the late (1966-1971) improvements. For instance; Earlier Ghia's made more extensive use of fabrics and interior trimmings. As the years progressed the interiors went to mostly vinyl with most of the flooring covered in rubber mats. I thing the fabric and full carpeting make the Ghia look classier. He elected to paint the dash. A 1967 factory Ghia would have had a black vinyl padded dash top with simulated wood dash face. Early model Ghia's had metal dashes. The passenger grab rail in my Ghia is from a 1958 Ghia. The 67 would have used a black plastic handle. There are some many small details that generally go unnoticed to most. Perhaps the most interesting is the VW nose emblem. The badge on mine is from a 1958 model. The early Ghia's used a blue enameled badge regardless of the cars color. The later badges were aluminum. All new rubber seals were installed and the suspension was fitted with Bilstein gas shocks.

He purchased her in 1997 with the intention of doing a " Rolling" Restoration. He said it sort of got out of hand and ended up doing an 8 year full body off restoration.

The original color was Bermuda Blue. It had been painted at some point in the past navy blue. The body was stripped to pare metal and all rust repairs made and repainted By Craig Cline the owner of Clines Autobody and Restorations in Albany Ohio.

His wife Beth picked the paint PPG Arrival Blue Pearl. A GM Color introduced in the 2004 model year.

Re-chroming was done by Advanced Chrome Plating in Chattanooga Tn.

Every detail was looked after as you can see by the trunk.

Interior details include an Repro "Empi" Eliminator shifter with a Karmann Ghia logo'd shift knob. The steering wheel is also a repro "Empi" GT Wood wheel.

The seats were reupholstered by Bill Webner of Der WagenWerks in Elyria Ohio. Mark's wife again chose the colors. White vinyl with navy wool corduroy inserts.

Mark purchased the German Wool Square-weave carpet kit from West coast Classic restorations along with a headliner and installed them himself.

The Engine is a 1641cc from a 1971 VW and features dual 36mm Dellorto Carburetors.

The exhaust is a Stainless Steel reproduction " Okrasa" 4-tip muffler. The engine was rebuilt and detailed by the owner.

Why a water pump?

When doing major surgery it’s always best to error on the side of replacing parts that could go bad shortly, then having to the labor part all over again…

That is sound advice, Imagine replacing a timing belt (078 109 119 H) on an Audi S4 2.7 liter. in order to get to the timing belt you must remove the noise insulation, front bumper, air intake hose, engine cover panel, fan, air shroud for the fan, serpentine belt, belt tensioner, timing cover, timing belt, tensioner, and pulley. This process would take about 5 hours to do.

The replacement of a water pump (078 121 006 A) will require you to remove the noise insulation, front bumper, air intake hose, engine cover panel, fan, serpentine belt, and belt tensioner. This process should take about 4 hours. The water pump only costs about $103.oo

It would probably make sense to replace the serpentine belt (078 903 137 BL) and belt tensioner (078 903 133 AB) while it is off.

Pap-Parts has simplified the process by offering a kit with everything (078 109 119 H super 2). The only other piece that could use to replace is the serpentine belt tensioner.

I have gotten a great appreciation for German built cars working for Pap-Parts so I really enjoy traveling to racetracks with our sister company, Truechoice Motorsports. It gives me a chance to see some great examples of German engineering. This Porsche 906E was owned by the late Henry Paine III of Payne Engineering of Scott Depot, WV and now his son, Henry Payne III is carrying on the Vintage racing Tradition. The late Henry Paine III was just awarded the Prestigious Charlie Gibson Memorial Award by Sasco Sports at this years SVRA awards Banquet. Here are some pic’s of the beautiful restoration done on this car.

Porsche 911 H4 headlamp upgrade

Porsche 911 H4 headlamp upgrade

After having a client ask about upgrading his 1986 911 to H4 headlights, I did some research by reading through Wayne Dempsey’s book “101 Projects for Your 911". This upgrade seams like it would be quick and easy to do. My best guess is that it would take about a half an hour and can be done with a Phillips screwdriver. (I suggest a good quality Phillips screwdriver because some of the screws will strip out fairly easy)

This popular upgrade replaces the entire headlamp assembly inside the headlamp bucket with a new Bosch H4 Euro headlamp assembly. Some folks say that the stock USA spec lights that came with the 911 are less than adequate for nighttime driving. This euro upgrade will allow you to project the light farther because the H4 lenses actually focus the light. (You can also upgrade the bulbs for off road use) I am not condoning or recommending you drive faster at night because you will be able to see further but that is up to you. (Prima facie applies here)

The first step is to get all the pieces. You will need 2 of the 911 631 113 00 Bosch H4 headlight assemblies 0-301-800-101(these are chrome). You will also need 2 of the 911 631 141 00 rims, 2 of the 911 631 033 00 screws, 2 of the 911 631 132 00 screws, 2 of the 911 631 103 90 bulbs, and 2 of the H4 bulbs*. It would be a good time to replace the fender seals 911 631 115 02 just because it’s apart and only costs $1.95. You can call us at 877-944-3056 or order them on line at pap-parts.com. Once FedEx delivers your box, you can get started. I suggest a well light area with a flat surface ex: garage or driveway. Make sure you make mental notes about how everything comes apart because it will go together in a very similar fashion. Ready….

Step 1) Remove the screw at the bottom of the headlight ring. You might want to put some masking tape on the paint in that area incase you slip with the screwdriver. (Scratch prevention) Once the screw is removed you can lift the ring off the fender. If its being stubborn and doesn’t come off right away you will need to twist it a little to loosen it up. (Did you pay attention to the angle at which the screw is installed? Hope so because it will need to back together the same way)

Step 2) Remove the three small screws holding the chrome headlight retainer. (These screws can be troublesome so use a good screwdriver and some penetrating oil so you don’t strip the heads out) now you can remove the headlight from the assembly.

Step 3) Remove the electrical plug from the back of the old headlight.

Step 4) Remove the four screws that hold the headlight retainer and remove the entire assembly from the headlight bucket.

Step 5) Install the rubber seal around the headlight opening on the fender. (Good time to put new ones in)

Step 6) Install the H4 bulb

Step 7) Connect the plug to the back of the new headlight assembly.

Step 8) Install the new assembly in the headlight bucket.

Step 9) Install the headlight ring (remember it fits over the lip on the top of the fender opening and the screw at the bottom gets installed at the same angle it came out)

Step 10) remove the masking tape (were you careful not to let the screwdriver slip off or did the tape save you from a scratch in your paint)

Step 11) Test your headlights (you may have to readjust them)

Step 12) Have a beer you earned it.

*H4 bulbs are 55/60 watt standard but also come in 55/100 watt and 80/100 for off road use only.

If you upgrade to 100W bulbs, I recommend installing an upgraded relay 141 951 253 B to safeguard against current overload and the inevitable fuse failure at high speed with no spares to be found. It’s fairly inexpensive at around $6

Why Bosch dishwashers?

It is really a long drawn out story but it all comes down to the big guy muscling the little guy. I really had no dealings with industrial giant Bosch until I started taking calls for our PAP-Parts company that sells Porsche, Audi, and VW parts. I quickly realized that we were getting 15 to 20 calls a day from people looking for Bosch’s service department to ask for parts for their Bosch dishwashers. When I asked our office staff about it they told me they called Bosch dozens of times over 4 years or so and nobody at Bosch wanted to fix the problem. Being ever the optimist I figured I could make a call or two and get this simple matter taken care of. How wrong I was! I called every Bosch number I could get my hands on and was directed from this person to that person. Finally I got the name and phone number of what I believed was the head of customer service, Clemens Schaller. I left several messages but alas, never a returned call.

How does a company as large as Bosch ignore people’s problems?

Frankly, I didn’t have the time to be chasing Mr. Schaller, answering all the misdialed calls and actually doing my job so I gave the only number I had to the callers looking for Bosch service. After that, it only took another 2 days to get a call back from Mr. Clemens office. WOW! My 2 years of trying to get this problem solved and finally some action. The girl was very nice, seemed genuinely concerned, and wanted to help. I explained we have been getting these wrong calls for about 4 years on our 800 line so it was costing us a fortune in toll calls and time. She said she would get it taken care of and we would be able to get some kind of compensation for our troubles. SOUNDS GREAT until the letter from Bosch’s general counsel arrives.

GUESS WHAT?

We are disrupting Bosch’s business and if we don’t quit giving out this one Bosch number they are going to sue us for damages for our intentional campaign of harassment to one of their highest-level executives. The letter instructs that “you are free to tell callers they have the wrong number and simply hang up or you can refer them to what you know is the right number” Double WOW! We get 15 to 20 calls a day for 4 years and it’s not disrupting to our business but one Bosch exec gets them for 2 days and its disrupting to theirs. What an attitude to ask us to just hang up on their customers. I guess it’s just another case of the “Big Company” not caring about the little guys and flexing their muscles. Plus it was cheaper than reprinting a label for the dishwasher too.

We have maintained our current number for the last 8 months hoping something would change now that it was brought to Bosch’s attention. However, we can no longer afford to pay for all those wrong numbers, keep prices down and quality up and risk getting sued by the Big Company. Our new number is 1-877-944-3056.

Sorry for the inconvenience. And yes, we do still sell Bosch parts! But I do not have one of their dishwashers; probably never will.

There are things I just don’t understand sometimes. I was picking my daughter up from summer camp and had to take a picture of this because I just don’t get it. I understand “Volkswagen for life” and “Farfegnugen” but the swimming?

Is there some social relevance I am missing?

Does this mean that Michael Phelps might be a Volkswagen owner?

I could see Dara Torres driving a beetle with a daisy in the bud vase.

What about the rest of the Olympic swimmers?

It’s been rebranded… Total petroleum is Elf’s parent company so they decided to create some confusion by consolidating and renaming their products.

Coolest bug

Every year the Hartford Fair (the biggest little fair in the world) has a car show the opening weekend on Sunday afternoon. This weekend’s show was very good as always with about 100 cars in attendance. I always enjoy small local shows because I always meet people who live near me that are “car people”.

I have developed an appreciation for VW’s through dealing with them everyday at PAP-Parts so I spend a few extra minutes checking them out. There was a nice Karmann-Ghia at the show but the true stand out was Gary Stone’s 62 beetle convertible. Personally, I could not see myself owning a bug even though I do have fond memories of a friends bug back in high school. The restoration on this car was incredible. Most people would miss Gary’s subtle changes because they are done so well.
